Warriors win California Classic, Heat mount comeback vs. Lakers, Keyonte George Continues Tear against 76ers in NBA Summer League
As the first leg of games round out in the 2024-25 NBA season’s summer league, the Golden State Warriors have been crowned as the winner of the California Classic after defeating the Sacramento Kings in a 91-90 thriller. Los Angeles Lakers draft picks Dalton Knecht and Bronny James saw more action during their disappointing defeat at the hands of the Miami Heat, 80-76.

Ajay Mitchell led the Oklahoma City Thunder past the Memphis Grizzlies 80-77 behind his 21-point, five-rebound performance. His scoring outpour was outdone only by Jazz sophomore guard Keyonte George, who scored 31 points to mark his second straight 30+ game in Summer League this year in their victory over the Philadelphia 76ers, 93-85.

Keon Ellis and the Kings mounted a 21-point comeback from the 59-38 deficit out of the halftime break, but Kevin Knox’s 19 points and five rebounds paired with Brandin Podziemski’s game-winning free throw was just enough to fend off the Sactown scoring flurry. All smiles for the Warriors’ Summer League roster postgame as they were presented with the California Classic Trophy.

As for Miami, their comeback climb from a 50-38 deficit was successful after dual 21-point performances from Alondes Williams and Keshad Johnson. Knecht and Colin Castleton showed great offensive flashes for the Lakers, scoring 20 and 18 in the bout respectively.

As to be expected, all eyes were on Bronny for his 29 minutes on the floor, as he recorded three points, five rebounds, and three assists in the defeat. His ability on the defensive side is coming along nicely, getting two steals and three blocks as a 6’2 guard.

In the Salt Lake City Summer League slate, Zach Edey’s absence from the Grizzlies rotation was sorely missed as they fell to the Thunder and George continued flexing his offensive bag with the Jazz’s win over the 76ers.

The Grizzlies had four players in their rotation score 17 points or more–Trey Jemison (20), GG Jackson II (18), Scottie Pippen Jr. (17), and Timmy Allen (17)--and still fell to the depth of OKC’s deep summer rotation led by Mitchell.

George, now averaging the most PPG in Summer League, has been finding the charity stripe with ease, finishing with 11-12 free throws to compliment his 9-15 field goal night. 76ers’ Ricky Council IV notched 20 points in the loss and first-round pick Jared McCain struggled to get the ball to drop finishing with just two points after shooting one-for-nine on the night.

Summer League action resumes on Friday, July 12th in Las Vegas with seven games, kicking off with a 4 PM EST matchup between the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Orlando Magic.
